The Three Most Common Hearing Aid Problems

The hearing aids brought into our hearing aid technicians because they are malfunctioning or not performing as designed usually fall into one of three categories of problems:

1. Earwax Accumulation. Earwax accumulation in internal tubing and/or delicate electronic components does significant damage to your hearing aids. Because it is such a serious problem, resulting in between 20% and 30% of hearing aid breakdowns, most major manufacturers provide wax filters and cleaning tools along with their hearing aids.

2. Corrosion from Moisture. Delicate electronic components and moisture don’t mix. Moisture leads to corrosion, which reduces battery life, leads to circuit failures, hampers performance, and/or causes a complete shutdown.

3. Physical Damage or Defects. Hearing aids get dropped and stepped on, which can cause damage to the case and/or loose wires, but even less noticeable issues, like damaged or defective microphones, receivers, tubes, tips, and earmolds are common issues that limit the performance of your hearing aids if left unaddressed.

Most of these issues are preventable if you develop a habit of cleaning and inspecting your hearing aids daily and by following the recommended maintenance schedule of your hearing aid and/or hearing care provider. Daily cleaning and inspection not only helps control earwax and moisture problems, but it also makes it easier to spot physical damage and defects early so you can bring them in for repair before they become a more costly issue.

Our Repair Service

Whether you are concerned that your hearing aids are underperforming or that they’ve stopped working altogether, our specialists have the equipment and expertise to diagnose the problem and then provide detailed repair, cleaning, and/or adjustment.

The hearing aid technicians in our office can conduct a range of maintenance and conventional repair services, but if your device has become more heavily damaged, we have access to most major hearing aid manufacturers in order to send it in for repairs.

Keep in mind that we use Federal Express or DHL to send your hearing aids to the manufacturer for repair, and they are usually returned to us using expedited shipping, so these repairs have an added cost.
