Children’s Hearing Care: Everything You Need to Know

If you suspect that your child is dealing with hearing loss, both of you can find expert advice and assistance from our pediatric hearing specialists

While we typically associate hearing loss with the older generation, hearing loss can majorly affect children and their development into working adults.

There are several types of hearing loss in children, and they all have similar warning signs: misunderstanding instructions, turning up the volume on the TV or tablet, avoiding noisy environments, not responding to sounds or voices, and more.

If you suspect that your child is dealing with hearing loss, both of you can find expert advice and assistance from our pediatric hearing specialists. Children’s audiology is one of our specialties to ensure that the next generation handles our legacies with strong, healthy hearing.

Early Intervention for the Benefit of Your Child’s Education

In September 2020, researchers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital tracked academic outcomes for deaf and hard of hearing children across Ohio. For children with hearing challenges, the time before they hit three years old is crucial for healthy speech and language development.

The study found that children who received early intervention in their hearing troubles—whether that be with children’s hearing aids or cochlear implants—were more ready to start kindergarten than children who didn’t.

Foundational skills like speech and communication are integral as your child goes through their schooling. Children who enter kindergarten ready to learn are more set up for academic success compared to  children who aren’t as strong in their communication skills.

Children with hearing challenges who aren’t quite prepared for school may deal with lowered literacy skills, delays in development of crucial skills, and more. Getting your child’s hearing checked will set them up for success as they grow.

Children’s Audiology With South Shore Hearing Center

As parents ourselves, we know what it’s like to worry about our children and about their development as they grow into the adults they need to be. Alleviate some of those concerns with a pediatric hearing test from our team of children’s audiologists.

We work with your child (and you) to ensure that your child stays comfortable and stress-free throughout the examination, so we get the most accurate results for your child’s range of hearing.

Hearing loss in children can come about due to different causes, including genetics, noise exposure, or infection, but you can get your child’s hearing challenges treated and alleviated with professional, personalized hearing care.

Our pediatric audiologists are trained to work with your child’s unique needs—no two children are the same, so neither are our approaches to children’s hearing care.
